I Don't Fuck With Classics (Big Sean x The Knocks)

The Hood Internet: I love you, please never stop making the best, simplest, smoothest mashups in the game. This mix is perfectly counterbalanced between Big Sean's aggressive "lil stupid ass bitch" calling and the classic groove of The Knocks. This seamless combination puts me at ease quite nicely.

Catching Up: The White Panda

The White Panda was one of my first mashup DJ obsessions in high school, so it's awesome to me to see how their work evolves and progresses, especially as they have been releasing more and more original remixes. (Side note: sophomore year of college I said hey to them after their show and then later hung out with them at a bar, nbd). So yeah, I love them.

I don't know if any of you were as obsessed as I was with Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" in late middle school. The real mystery is actually what did she say?! I've been dying to know for like ten years now. I never did watch the OC, but I did catch that season 2 finale where Marissa shoots a firearm to this dramatic tune. More important, I mostly watched the SNL parody of that scene... many a time. Anyways, awesome remix of really just that classic line of the song here.

Although there have been a shit ton of Disclosure remixes, I don't think I've heard a mashup of one of their tracks. As per usual, The White Panda brings some serious originality here in pairing "Latch" with "Cooler than Me" by Mike Posner. (Like, wut? Who thinks of that?) This is a fun track and I know you know all the words.

Long live The White Stripes. I mean, even my dad loved them. And Meg White is a badass drummer. Pretty unexpected remix but nonetheless dope.

I love a good Flume track, and even more I think I love it with Kanye West even better. You may think that this song might have been forever marked as one of The Hangover themes, but no, this is awesome. P.S. I'm not getting a sig on my beeper.

Girl vs. Work It

This mashup is pretty old but so bizarrely brilliant that I just had to share it with you. As always, I stand by anything related to Missy Elliott, and mixing "Work It" with "Girl" (work it, girl) by Jamie xx only seems wildly appropriate. Enjoy.

Sock It 2 Summer

As per usual, The Hood Internet continues to kill it with one of their latest mashes. Also anything having to do with Missy Elliott is an automatic yes. Who could forget the fantastic video for the song featured in this mash, "Sock It To Me?" (When can I arrange to have a custom Transformers/Power Rangers suit like hers made? Because I want one.) She is a pioneer in weird, original badassery that continues to be seen in girl rappers/bosses today. Additionally, Missy is the reason that my sister and I fell deeply in love with Adidas tracksuits. I don't know how The Hood Internet had the genius to pair this with the ever soothing "Indian Summer" by Blood Cultures, but it works in magical ways that few could anticipate. I would really hope to say that I socked it 2 summer this year.

How You Love Me

Again with the cheesy lyrics, but what can you do. The beat is solid and it follows throughout the song. Anyways, before 3LAU did his own original material, I knew him for his mashups and "Inspired By Rehab" still remains as my favorite mashup that I've ever heard, so I decided it was worth posting here even though it's like 2 years old.

Lanes

I have no idea where this is coming from, but if "Take On Me" by A-ha is involved in a sample, count me in. Big Boi has taken to mixing his own tracks over various vintage tracks to create a very high energy blend. Mind you, the original "Lines," which features Phantogram, was already a pretty awesome collaboration. Check it:

Also, Big Boi released another mashup track "Part Time Hater" just a few hours ago:

Wake All The Timber Up

Alright, I know. You're so sick of Timber and anything having to do with it but I can promise you this is the least annoying mashup involving that song you could possibly imagine because it's actually incredible. I will openly admit that I probably won't be over Timber for a little while because it's a great song to get drunk to and yes, you're going to dance to it at the bar whether you like it or not. Don't try to deny it, no matter how obnoxious you think Ke$ha is (not to mention how unnecessary the $ is as an S in her name). With that being said, you might just dance even more to this awesome mashup than to the original because oh yeah, it involves another overplayed but lovable nonetheless tune, Wake Me Up. You're most likely already rolling your eyes at this point, but I can PROMISE you this track is worth a listen.. and another and another.

The Hood Internet

For those of you who haven't heard of one of the first and best mashup groups, The Hood Internet, is at it again. They've been in the game since 2007 and I've been following all of their releases since the 11th grade. Mashups have always fascinated me because it seems like it would be so simple, but it actually requires so much more than putting two (or more) songs together to make it sound fabulous. A lot goes into making an excellent mashup, and The Hood Internet can do no wrong. Sometimes I find that they can take two original songs that I didn't even think I liked to create a masterpiece of a mashup. Their most recent work features a perfect blend of Pusha T + Kendrick Lamar's Nosetalgia and ASTR's R U With Me. I included some more of my older favorite songs by them but I would highly encourage a thorough exploration of their Soundcloud!
